Turn Jurong West Hawker Centre into entrepreneurial test bed for students
I refer to Voices writer Lee Jia Xin’s letter, “Shut Jurong West Hawker Centre and repurpose site” (July 24), which suggested closing the Jurong West Hawker Centre and repurposing the site.

With many childcare centres and primary and secondary schools near the hawker centre, and a university 10 minutes away by car, I have thought of how it could be emptied out and repurposed.
Here are my suggestions:
- It could evolve into a dementia-friendly and an elder-friendly place for seniors to gather and chitchat. Students of various ages could interact with the seniors through music and dance performances and storytelling as part of their community involvement projects.
- The nearby Pioneer Polyclinic could use the place for health talks, community health checks, healthy-cooking classes and sampling of healthy dishes.
- Students could use the various stall spaces at the Jurong West Hawker Centre as test beds for their entrepreneurial ideas, which they could brainstorm and design in school as part of their curriculum. There could also be a monthly flea market in the repurposed hawker centre.
It is a beautiful two-storey space carved out for the community.
While it is sad that the space is not working out for the community, it can be repurposed to serve everyone better.
