We thank Mr David Kwok Ng Kan for his feedback (“SMRT should reduce noise from overnight work at Tanjong Pagar MRT Station”; May 4).

SMRT carries out maintenance works at night as these cannot be done during train service operating hours. Such works are needed even during the circuit breaker as we continue to provide public transport services to our commuters.

Depending on the type of works, such as rail grinding or rail replacement in the tunnels, tunnel ventilation fans will be switched on to expel the fumes, which are harmful to our staff members. These fans are regularly maintained.

To reduce the noise generated, big underground silencers have been installed for our tunnel ventilation fans.

The Land Transport Authority has plans to renew the fans and silencers in the near future.

SMRT will continue to inform the constituencies in advance of the night maintenance works. This maintenance schedule is also published on the SMRT website.
