The announcement during the National Day Rally that Paya Lebar Air Base will be moved, freeing up land for commercial and residential use, has significant implications. (“Paya Lebar Air Base to move to Changi”; Aug 19)

Moving the military facility to Changi is akin to placing more eggs in the same basket.

While less of the surrounding land would have height restrictions, and more land in a central location could be used for housing and factories, it would be easier to eliminate our air force if we face an air strike. And air superiority is vital for a successful ground campaign.

If we must move our assets, I would suggest that our armed forces look at constructing alternative bases either in less central places, such as Marsiling and Jurong, or one of our islands, such as Pulau Tekong or even Pulau Ubin.

When we decide on such an important move, we should consider strategic interests ahead of commercial interests and consider Singapore’s total defence.
