KOTA BARU —  Three sisters died of electrocution in front of a flooded house in Malaysia’s northern Kelantan state on Monday (Dec 19), Malaysian authorities said.

Kelantan police chief Zaki Harun said the victims, Noor Fathiah Mohd Nadzir, 27, Sakinah Mohd Nadzir, 29, and Nurul Syazwani Mohd Nadzir, 33, died at the scene of the incident at around 11.30 am.

"Police believe that a leak in the electrical wiring of one of the houses in the village led to the electrocution of the three sisters as they headed towards an irrigation canal,” Mr Zaki said at a press conference.

“One of the sisters slipped and grabbed a pillar and was electrocuted. Her sisters came to her aid but also succumbed to the same fate,” he added.

He said that the police have classified the incident as a sudden death and that further investigations are ongoing.

The sisters’ bodies were sent to Tumpat Hospital for a post-mortem.

News agency Bernama quoted a neighbour, Che Zahiyah Che Yaakob, 53, who witnessed the tragedy and said that she had greeted the sisters as they passed by her house.

Earlier on Monday, a 15-month-old boy drowned in the floodwaters of the same state, in Kampung Gual Tok Deh.

Local fire station chief Shapawi Stapa said the boy was said to be playing with his elder sister at the porch of their house at about 1pm when the incident happened.

He said the station was alerted to the incident but the boy had died by the time firemen reached the scene. AGENCIES
