BANGKOK — Former Thai prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva was today (Dec 12) indicted for murder in connection with the military crackdown on protests in the capital in 2010.

The attorney general’s office carried out the indictment in a closed-door hearing today, reported AFP. The charges stem from the crackdown on “Red Shirt” demonstrators loyal to Mr Abhisit’s predecessor Thaksin Shinawatra.

More than 90 people died and nearly 1,900 others were wounded in the violence which rocked Thailand three years ago.

Meanwhile, the grounds of the prime minister’s office was breached by a small group of anti-government protesters this morning. The demonstrators climbing over the walls in the grounds but quickly left after they moved aside internal barricades, a Reuters reporter said.

The protesters said they wanted the police to withdraw from Government House. Riot police in the area held their positions and there was no confrontation. The protesters left after a few minutes.

On Monday, around 160,000 people massed around Government House and Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, Thaksin’s younger sister, and called a snap election in a bid to end the unrest.

The protesters have rejected that and say they want an unelected “people’s council” to govern. AGENCIES
