Subang Jaya Catholic church to hold Mass tonight to mark miracle of ‘weeping’ Mary statue

SUBANG JAYA — A special Mass and rosary recitation will be held at the St Thomas More Catholic Church here tonight (Oct 14), celebrating the Virgin Mary, after reports of a miracle involving her statue in the grotto circulated on social media.

The Mass is scheduled to start at 7pm outside the grotto of the Virgin Mary on church grounds.

Scores of the faithful have been flocking to the church that serves the Catholic congregation in Subang Jaya, Selangor since last Wednesday when some parishioners reported seeing the statue “weep”.

“It shed a tear. I noticed water in her eyes for three days. On the third day, the tears came down,” St Thomas More’s parish priest Rev Father Raymond Pereira told Malay Mail Online when met outside the grotto today.

Earlier today, English-language newspaper The Star reported the church’s Virgin Mary statue made from polyresin to have changed into porcelain and grown taller by 7.5cm.

The priest clarified that the statue was originally made of fibreglass, and added that he was unsure if its composition had changed though he remarked that it looked taller.

He declined to make further comments to the media when approached by a satellite television broadcast channel for an interview, saying he needed permission from the Kuala Lumpur Archbishop Julian Leow Beng Kim.

Around him, dozens of Catholics stood or sat on chairs under the marquee erected opposite the grotto, their heads bowed and hands clasped in prayer.

Some sang the “Ave Maria”, others recited the “Hail Mary” even as more went right up to the grotto and snapped pictures of the two statues inside, with the larger one upright while the small one in a kneeling position, while water cascaded from a built-in decorative feature at the back of the grotto.
