JAKARTA — A suspicious package containing white powder and a threatening letter was found at Indonesia’s Embassy in the Australian capital yesterday, the Indonesian Foreign Affairs Ministry has reported.
The package was reported to police at about 10.45am local time, according to Australian media, prompting the police, Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Fire and Rescue, and hazardous material specialists to be called to the scene.
Mr Arrmanatha Nasir, spokesman of the Indonesian Foreign Affairs Ministry, told the Jakarta Globe yesterday that a packet containing suspicious powder and a “threat letter” was discovered at the Indonesian embassy in Canberra.
Embassy officials handed the package to the HAZMAT squad of the Canberra police, which deals with emergency incidents involving hazardous materials. The package has been transported in a sealed container to ACT Pathology at the Canberra Hospital for analysis, the Canberra Times reported.
The incident comes a week after Australian drug traffickers Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran were executed along with six other drug smugglers by firing squad in Indonesia, plunging Indonesia-Australia relations to a new low.
Australian Ambassador to Indonesia Paul Grigson was recalled to Australia in the wake of the two executions.
Asked whether the incident was related to the executions, Mr Arrmanatha said “we will wait until we have obtained the results from examination”. JAKARTA GLOBE
