SICHUAN, CHINA — A woman from China's Sichuan province decided to break up with her boyfriend after she was served "cold dishes" for her two-day stay during a visit to his family home for the first time.
Last Monday (Jan 2), the woman took to Chinese social media to share images of the perceived frugal meals that his parents had served her over the new year holiday and they quickly went viral, video platform Sukan Shixun reported last Friday.
For her first meeting with her boyfriend's parents, the woman had travelled two and a half hours by car to their home in a remote area. She was both worried and looking forward to the meeting, she said.
But when she got there, she found herself stunned by the overly simple fare.

According to the woman, the family's meals during her visit consisted of noodles, plain white porridge, and cold dishes.
When she asked her boyfriend about the dishes, he reasoned that the "daily life of common people" was simply such.
"My boyfriend also knows that I don't like noodles, but noodles were still served every meal," she told Sukan Shixun.
"I didn't expect it to be so embarrassing."
After two days, the woman could no longer bear staying with the family. She packed her bags and left her boyfriend's family home, and decided to break up with him.
On Chinese microblogging site Weibo, the hashtag #女生回男友家过节后决定分手# (Girl spends the holiday at boyfriend's house, decides to break up) has been viewed over 300 million times.
Netizens have praised her for her decision, but criticised the boyfriend and his parents for being poor hosts.
One Weibo user shared that although her boyfriend's family also eats similar simple meals daily, she is treated to sumptuous meals every time she visits their home, including spicy dishes which is something she loves.
Going back to the incident, the user added: "I personally feel that no matter whether you are a boyfriend or girlfriend, when you arrive at the other party's house you are at least a guest.
"In any case, no polite family would allow their guests to eat cold meals."
Most netizens seemed to agree that whether the family is well-off or not, a partner visiting for the first time is an important event.
"(They are) really not taking you seriously," remarked one Weibo user.
However, others felt that it may not have been a deliberate snub by her boyfriend's parents, but a misunderstanding due to differences in family culture and expectations.
Instead, it was her boyfriend who raised red flags for some netizens as he did not seem to have bothered to rectify the situation even after she raised her concerns to him.
One top comment on Weibo read: "If marriage represents this kind of compromise, putting up with (something) and not being cared about, then what's the point of marriage?"
Still, whether or not the menu was intentional, most netizens agreed with her decision to end the relationship.
"(Your) lifestyles are not suitable," said one user on web portal Sinanet. "There's no need to force (yourself) staying together."
