Covid-19 cases in Malaysia top one million with record 17,045 new infections

KUALA LUMPUR — The number of Covid-19 cases recorded in Malaysia has passed the one million mark as the country registered 17,045 new infections on Sunday (July 25), breaking Saturday’s record of 15,902.

KUALA LUMPUR — The number of Covid-19 cases recorded in Malaysia has passed the one million mark as the country registered 17,045 new infections on Sunday (July 25), breaking Saturday’s record of 15,902.

Sunday’s tally bring Malaysia’s cumulative total to 1,013,438.

Health director-general Noor Hisham Abdullah said Selangor accounted for the bulk of the cases with 8,500 infections.

This, he said, was followed by Kuala Lumpur with 2,045 cases, and Kedah with 1,216 cases.

He said Johor recorded 950 cases, Sabah (818), Sarawak (407), Malacca (370), Pahang (424), Penang (573), Perak (609), Labuan (21), Kelantan (266), Terengganu (273), Putrajaya (50) and Perlis (10).

Selangor now has 367,469 cases, followed by Kuala Lumpur with 110,051.

Earlier on Sunday, Health Minister Adham Baba said the country had administered 417,738 doses of vaccine under the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme on Saturday.

The latest daily vaccination number fell short for the second day in a row from the all-time high of 507,050 doses administered on Thursday.

A total of 284,672 individuals were given their first dose, while the remaining 133,066 completed their second dose yesterday, Adham tweeted, citing data from the Covid-19 Immunisation Task Force.

More than 16.9 million Covid-19 vaccine doses have been administered to date, with 11.5 million people or 35.2 per cent of the population receiving at least the first dose.

Cumulatively, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya have the highest number of first doses administered at 4,711,715, followed by Sarawak (1,644,583), Johor (845,126) and Perak (653,851). THE MALAYSIAN INSIGHT
