PARIS, FRANCE — Disney has issued an apology after a viral video showed a Disneyland employee putting an abrupt end to a couple's fairytale marriage proposal.

The incident, captured in a video that has gone viral, took place at the theme park in Paris, France.

On forum site Reddit, where the video was published and has since attracted over 10,300 comments, one user named “wasgehtlan” claimed that his best friend was granted permission to propose on the platform beforehand.

The video first surfaced last Friday (June 3), showing an elevated stage with the iconic Sleeping Beauty Castle in Disneyland Paris in full view.

As soon as the man gets down on bended knee to loud applause from the crowd of onlookers, a male cast member rushes out to stop them.

A woman can be seen reaching out for the ring box before it is suddenly snatched away by the cast member, who quickly moves to get the confused couple down the stairs.

Though opinions were divided among online users, many have expressed outrage at the cast member's cheery expression as he ushered the couple away, even suggesting that he should be fired for what he did.

In a statement to digital news site Newsweek, a Disney spokesperson said: "We regret how this was handled. We have apologised to the couple involved and offered to make it right."

According to The New York Times, the man is known only as Ante and lives near Stuttgart, Germany. The 31-year-old, who works in the IT industry, told the publication that he and his 26-year-old girlfriend were "perplexed and saddened" at how the proposal was disrupted.

He claims that he had asked another employee for permission before climbing onto the stage, but Disney was not able to immediately confirm whether it was the case.

Ante also told The New York Times that Disney had reached out to the couple to offer them a free weekend in a Disneyland park and hotel of their choice, which they had refused to take up.

As to whether Ante's girlfriend said 'yes', he said both of them weren't even sure about that, but they did find a nearby bench after the incident where Ante put the ring on her finger.
