SINGAPORE/SELANGOR — From July 1, people in Selangor will no longer be able to freely pick up straws from food and beverage (F&B) outlets in the Malaysian state, news agency Bernama reported on Monday (June 17).

They can still obtain plastic straws, but only upon request.

The policy aims to educate residents and increase their awareness of the long-term health and environmental impacts that plastics have, said Selangor’s environment, green technology, science and consumer affairs committee chairman Hee Loy Sian.

The move to restrict straws comes as Selangor expands its efforts to cut down on the use of single-use plastics such as bags, containers and covers.

Local authorities will assist in monitoring the policy’s implementation, added Mr Hee.

For example, the ban will be included in business licence applications when restaurant operators submit new applications or renew existing licences.

Mr Hee noted that some restaurants have already begun using paper or bamboo straws, or distributing free stainless steel straws to the public.

“The public are also encouraged to bring their own reusable food and drink containers and straws,” he added. AGENCIES
