King accepts Dr Mahathir's resignation, appoints him as interim PM
KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysian king Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah has accepted Dr Mahathir Mohamad's resignation as prime minister.
Former Prime Minister, Dr Mahathir Mohamad, is now interim Prime Minister pending the appointment of a new prime minister.
KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysian king Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah has accepted Dr Mahathir Mohamad's resignation as prime minister.
This after Dr Mahathir handed in his resignation letter at 1pm on Monday.
Confirmation of the King accepting Dr Mahathir's resignation was announced by Chief Secretary to the Government Mohd Zuki Ali in a statement Monday evening.
"However, His Majesty consents to the appointment of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as the interim Prime Minister, while waiting for the appointment of a new prime minister in line with Article 43(2)(a) of the Federal Constitution," he said.
"Therefore, during this period, he (Dr Mahathir) will handle the administration of the country until a new Prime Minister is appointed and a new Cabinet is formed," Mr Mohd Zuki added. NEW STRAITS TIMES
