SINGAPORE — Malaysia is still without a new government or prime minister three days after the country went to the polls. None of the candidates for the top job proposed by the various political parties and coalitions has support from a simple majority of members of parliament, the Malaysian king said on Tuesday (Nov 22).
In a statement posted on Facebook, Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, the current monarch, said that he had met with political party leaders and received their proposals for who should be Malaysia's next prime minister, after having extended his deadline for them to do so by 24 hours to 2pm on Tuesday.
He then surveyed members of parliament to ask which of these candidates they would support, but found that no single candidate had garnered a simple majority of support.
He has thus asked the leaders of the two top-performing coalitions in the election, Pakatan Harapan and Perikatan Nasional, to meet him at the Istana Negara (National Palace) at 4.30pm.
