KUALA LUMPUR — The deputy inspector-general of police (IGP) hinted on Thursday (Sept 13) that the authorities may know fugitive businessman Low Taek Jho’s latest hideout, but are choosing to stay mum on the details.

At a press conference on Thursday, Tan Sri Noor Rashid Ibrahim said that the police are also currently faced with an uphill task when it comes to interviewing foreign witnesses implicated in the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal.

“Let it be a secret at this moment. We don’t want to disrupt what we have been working on all this time,” he said, when asked if the police have found Low, also known as Jho Low, who is on the run from Malaysian authorities, as he is wanted for alleged financial crimes involving 1MDB.

“I think, I put it this way. I cannot confirm where he is now, but of course, we have the information, but you see, it involves the sovereignty of another country which we have to respect.

“We cannot send our enforcement officers into one country and execute an arrest there. Of course, we need assistance, cooperation and also approval from the country concerned,” he added.

Last month, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun said that the police still did not have any positive leads on Low’s whereabouts, asking the public to give his force time to trace the fugitive businessman.

Mr Mohamad Fuzi explained that his agency was also awaiting replies from some Interpol member countries to the Red Corner Notice issued for Low.

He said he has informed seven countries so far through the Interpol Red Notice to determine Low’s whereabouts.

The countries are Hong Kong, Macau, India, Myanmar, China, Indonesia and the United Arab Emirates.

Malaysian police have also asked their Taiwanese counterparts for assistance through a diplomatic note.

Low was reported to have been based in Hong Kong for weeks but escaped to neighbouring Macau in early July, when a Malaysian team went to the former British colony in search of him.  MALAY MAIL
