KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysia's ruling Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition on Thursday (May 17) received its certificate of registration, after it was denied one for months by the Registrar of Societies (Ros).

The Home Ministry secretary-general Alwi Ibrahim handed over the certificate to Prime Minister and PH chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad in a brief ceremony at the Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) office in Petaling Jaya, Selangor on Thursday morning.

The PH pact comprises PPBM, Parti Keadilan Rakyat, Democratic Action Party and Parti Amanah Negara.

Incoming Home Minister Muhyiddin Yassin had announced the RoS' approved of PH as an official pact on Wednesday night.

"Tonight, I am announcing, as the Home Minister, a decision that is long awaited. This (decision) did not involve me as I have not been sworn in yet," he said.

"I would to announce that PH's application to be registered was approved today. This was related to me by the Home Ministry's secretary-general," he said.

Earlier this year, the RoS had claimed it was unable to approve PH’s application for a registration certificate because PPBM, a party founded by the PM, had failed to provide necessary information for the process to be complete.

In April, PPBM was subsequently deregistered as a political party ahead of the 14th General Election.

The decision by the RoS to do so was under Section 14(5) of the Societies Act 1996 which reads that the registrar is allowed to make a provisional order for the dissolution of the society if the required details were not provided.

This included details of its branch meetings, divisions and centres, and financial statements.

PH subsequently filed for a judicial review of the RoS' move, alleging that its failure to respond to a registration bid was unlawful.

PH parties then contested the election under PKR’s ticket and logo in Peninsular Malaysia, and the pact then took over Putrajaya after a shock win against then-ruling Barisan Nasional.

On Wednesday, Mr Muhyiddin also said PPBM has been reinstated as a legal entity and there are no longer any issues related to its registration. AGENCIES
