PUTRAJAYA — Malaysian prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin has barred all Ramadan bazaars from opening until the movement control order (MCO) is lifted, said the country’s senior minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

Mr Ismail said the decision is final despite the Federal Territories Ministry preparing to unveil a plan to set up bazaar sites.

“The prime minister has decided that all forms of Ramadan bazaars will not be allowed to operate for the entirety of the MCO,” he said in his daily press briefing on the Covid-19 situation in the country.

On Saturday, Federal Territories Minister Annuar Musa said a list of Ramadan bazaars permitted to open in 66 locations in Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya will be finalised by this week.

Mr Annuar said ministry officials were to meet with hawker associations on Sunday to work out how the stalls could be positioned, adding that social distancing rules would apply.

The MCO has twice been extended, now until April 28 while the fasting month is expected to begin on April 23.
