KUALA LUMPUR — Sultan of Selangor has suspended titles awarded to former Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak and wife Rosmah Mansor following a slew of criminal charges brought against them.

Selangor government secretary Mohd Amin Ahmad Yayha said in a statement on Friday (May 10) that the suspension was effective May 6 until the court hearings into the charges are completed, including any appeals process.

Najib’s titles from the state are Dato’ Seri when he was awarded the Darjah Kebesaran Seri Paduka Mahkota Selangor in 2004, and Dato’ when he received the Darjah Kebesaran Paduka Mahkota Selangor in 1992.

The former prime minister currently faces 42 charges of corruption, money laundering and abuse of power related to 1Malaysia Development Bhd.

“Because of the charges, his awards and titles are suspended effective May 6 until trial and appeals (if any) are completed in the courts.

“The suspension and use of these titles awarded by His Highness the Sultan of Selangor will be reviewed once the cases are completed in court,” Mr Mohd Amin’s statement said.

As for Rosmah, her Datin Paduka Seri title awarded in 2005 is suspended under the same conditions pending completion of her court cases.

Rosmah faces 19 charges, two of which are for asking and receiving a bribes over a solar hybrid power project for Sarawak schools.

Her 17 other charges involve money laundering and failure to declare income to the Inland Revenue Board over RM7 million (S$2.29 million).

The Selangor palace also announced today that it had revoked the Dato’ title of Zulkifli Shariff, the former executive chairman and director of NGV Tech Sdn Bhd, for being declared a bankrupt by the Insolvency Department.
