BANGKOK — Some of more than 500 New Year cards sent by children across Thailand to Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha turned out to be wishes for him to restrain his hot temper and smile more.

One of the cards put on display at Thailand's Government House read "Happy New Year to You" in English and "Wishing the PM good health and long life — and don't be so hot-headed. Don't rage [about things so much] because it's not good. Smile more."

Most of the cards contained a colourful drawing of Mr Prayut, some depicting him in military uniform. These were accompanied by good wishes in both Thai and English.

Another message read "May the PM be happy, enjoy good health and never give up fighting to develop the country ... And don't be so hot-headed."

The cards are on display for children visiting the Government House for National Children's Day on Saturday.

Mr Prayut also met with a group of students led by Education Minister Nataphol Teepsuwan on Tuesday (Jan 7) to promote Teachers' Day on Jan 16.

When asked by Mr Prayut on what they wanted to be when they grew up, one student said he wanted to be a soldier. This prompted Mr Prayut to offer advice on staying physically and mentally fit, along with a story from his experience in battle.

But when he asked students if any of them wanted to become prime minister, they all shook their heads and said there was too much work involved. BANGKOK POST
