WUHAN — A young woman in central China has regained consciousness after four months in a coma while listening to a pop song by the Taiwanese singer Jay Chou, according to a newspaper report.

The 24-year-old woman started moving her legs faintly to the music as a male nurse in a hospital in Wuhan in Hubei province played the song Rosemary, according to the Wuhan Evening News.

Mr Peng Keling, the intensive care unit nurse, had been playing Jay Chou's music to try to revive the woman over a period of about three months, according to the article.

The patient, whose name was not given, finally opened her eyes and then completed simple instructions from the nurse such as raising her arms and legs and pointing her fingers.

"Doctors all came to her bed while I kept singing the song she liked," the nurse was quoted as saying in his diary.

"When I asked her how well I sang, she said 'not bad' weakly,” he added.

The patient was suffering from a brain dysfunction caused by a lack of oxygen and fell unconscious in November.

Her heart stopped beating three times and her lungs and kidneys were severely damaged.

Mr Peng, who is a similar age to the woman, played music and also read her jokes and entertainment news to try to revive her.

"I listened to Jay Chou's songs growing up, so I thought maybe she'd like them, too," Peng was quoted as saying.

The woman came out of her coma in March and has since been transferred from intensive care to a general ward, according to the report.

Jay Chou was at the height of his popularity in the 2000s and Rosemary was released by the artist in 2006. SOUTH CHINA MORNING POST
