Woman watches helplessly as husband burns to death in JB car accident

JOHOR BARU — A woman could only watch helplessly as her husband was consumed by flames in a tragic car accident at KM41 of the North-South Expressway near Kulai, Johor Baru on Wednesday (Dec 27).

The family's Proton Persona was believed to have collided with a trailer and stalled, before a fire started.

The man, 29, who was driving, was pinned to the driver's seat and was unable to get out. His wife, in her 30s, and their three-year-old daughter were seated in the back.

Passers-by managed to free the woman and child but not the husband.

Kulai Fire and Rescue Department operation chief Azizan Aziz said the department was notified around 6am of a burning car near the Kulai exit.

"When firefighters arrived at the scene, the car was entirely up in flames.

"It took us 45 minutes to extinguish the blaze," he said.

Mr Azizan said firemen later found the man's remains in the car.

Meanwhile, Kulai district police chief Superintendent Dzulkhairi Mokhtar said the remains were sent to the Kulai mortuary for a post mortem examination.

As for the survivors, he said the woman is currently warded at the Kulai Hospital while her daughter was unhurt.

Mr Dzulkhairi said initial investigation suggests the car may have been involved in a collision with a trailer as there was severe damage to the front area of the car.

"Based on eyewitness accounts, the victim may have crashed into the back of a moving trailer before it caught fire," he said. NEW STRAITS TIMES
