2 Degree Ice Art: A chilly experience

SINGAPORE — You do not have to wait much longer if you are looking for a place to chill — literally.

SINGAPORE — You do not have to wait much longer if you are looking for a place to chill — literally.

Come Nov 20, 2 Degree Ice Art 2013/2014 — the largest ice art exhibition in Singapore yet, will be held at the open field next to the Marina Bay Sands Hotel for six months, and I had a sneak peek of it ahead of its official opening yesterday (Nov 14).

Organised by Century Ice Wonderland with the participation of the Harbin International Ice Lantern Art Association, the exhibition gives locals a feel of the International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival held annually in China’s north east region of Harbin.

The 30-odd pieces of ice art feature the likes of regional and international landmarks such as the Singapore Merlion, London’s Big Ben and France’s Eiffel Tower which I have to say, are pretty admirable. On top of that, a handful of ice sculptures are actually carved from dyed or coloured ice blocks and are embedded with LED lighting which makes it much more vibrant and colourful than your usual ice sculptures.

And if you were wondering, yes, it is pretty cold inside the exhibition. At -15°C, it’s possibly the closest thing for a local to experience winter on this sunny island. In fact, despite a coat and gloves, a couple of us were still freezing, and taking pictures and shooting videos were also a challenge since my fingers almost felt like they were frozen. Still, I admit I couldn’t help but to get excited the first time I saw mist coming out of my mouth. The floor will be carpeted as well, so you don’t have to worry about embarrassing slips.

It wasn’t just the ice sculptures that I was entertained with — a playground made of ice is available for children (I like to think I’m young at heart), so it would be worth a visit if you’re looking to bring the little ones out.

For adults, an ice bar will be opened daily, where drinks will be served in specially carved authentic ice mugs — and the best part? Once you are done with your drink, you can throw the ice mugs against a target board — which you have to admit sounds pretty, well, cool.

The 2 Degree Ice Art 2013/2014 exhibition opens Nov 20 and runs until May 15, 2014. Gloves are complimentary for ticket-holders while coats are available for rental at S$5.
