HONG KONG — Singapore artist and Cultural Medallion recipient Lee Wen has been discharged from a Hong Kong hospital today (May 18) after losing consciousness in a university toilet.

Lee Wen has been in Hong Kong as his work has been showcased at Art Basel which is a huge global event for the international art scene.

He lost consciousness in a bathroom floor at City University after taking part in an art seminar last night.

He sustained abrasions on his face, amid speculation on social media that he had been attacked after he expressed concern about soldier-turned-artist Chen Guang.

Chen Guang was arrested after staging a performance art piece commemorating the 1989 Tiananmen Square incident. Lee reportedly commented on China’s law and order and remarked that things have got to change.

Police said the incident happened at around 6.40pm last night and that Mr Lee initially told a companion that he thought he was attacked from behind.

However, after filing a report with the police, he was no longer sure whether or not he was attacked or if he simply fell unconscious.

Mr Lee has reportedly been suffering from Parkinson’s disease for over five years.

Hong Kong police first classified the case as an alleged assault but have now changed it to a request for police investigation. CHANNEL NEWSASIA
