SINGAPORE — Actress, director and producer Michelle Chong is sending Lulu — the beloved Chinese KTV hostess known for her giant hair and strong Chinese accent — from Singapore to all around the world with her new film, Lulu The Movie.

The film tells the backstory of the larger-than-life character first seen on the sitcom The Noose, from how Lulu first moved here from China in search of her online boyfriend (played by Chen Tianwen) to how she built a life and career for herself in Singapore.

Lulu The Movie also stars Glenn Ong and The Flying Dutchman, also known as Mark van Cuylenburg, who were present with Lulu and Chen at a press conference on Monday (Nov 21). The conference was hosted by Pornsak, who, in a Lulu tribute outfit complete with wig and leopard print shoes, nearly threatened to steal the show from Lulu herself, who was clad in a leopard print mini-skirt and fishnet stockings.

In the movie, which also stars Singaporean singer-actor Leon Jay Williams, Lulu travels to cities such as London and Shanghai. “Look at me. I am fashionista. You know London is a fashion capital,” Lulu explained. In fact, thanks to the “very big budget”, “we go everywhere — Toa Payoh, Bugis, Geylang”, she quipped.

It was so much fun that Ong declared working on the movie “the best four days”. “Of your life?” Lulu exclaimed. “Of my entertainment life,” Ong said, explaining: “I was enjoying just watching her work, just being Lulu, being Michelle the director. She’s extremely talented.”

“I just hope everyone watch already is very happy. It’s a very happy movie,” Lulu said, adding that she had not set a box office target for the film. “Just watch, have fun, laugh, maybe cry a little.”

Lulu The Movie opens in cinemas Nov 24.
