Seraph Sun contemplates her choice

SINGAPORE — Does MediaCorp artiste Seraph Sun look like Singapore’s veteran songstress Kit Chan? Some people think so. Sun, whose acting career is just two years old, plays the younger version of Chan’s character in the movie Ms J Contemplates Her Choice — and it was partly her looks that landed her the role.

“I didn’t realise it until (the director) was like, ‘You look so much like her.’ And when I watched the movie, I was like, ‘Yeah, there are indeed similarities’,” she said.

“I was very happy to be compared to her. She’s so famous and everything, and I wish I could sing like her. I was like, ‘Why is it that I only look like her but I don’t sing like her?’ That’s a very sad thing.”

The 26-year-old is currently filming for the MediaCorp TV Channel 8 drama Hand In Hand, which is slated to air in September. Ms J Contemplates Her Choice was filmed in early 2014 and premiered at the Singapore International Film Festival last year. The movie, which also stars Xiang Yun, Shane Pow and Bobby Tonelli, is about what happens when Ms J (played by Chan) has her radio show hijacked by a mystery caller who forces her to choose which of his two murder targets gets to live.

It’s a tough choice to make and anyone would crack under that pressure. But how would Sun react if she were put in equally vexing hypothetical situations and forced to choose one of two options? We put her to the test.

Q: Would you rather be pretty or intelligent?

A: I’d rather be intelligent — and then I’d go for plastic surgery. (Laughs) If I had to choose one, I’d still choose intellect. That would mean I have substance on the inside. Looks deteriorate over time and, you know, with women, it happens very fast. Too fast!

Q: Would you rather have fame or fortune?

A: Fortune. You can have a really good life if you have fortune. Fame is quite tiring. In Singapore it’s still fine — there’s no paparazzi and the reporters are all very nice and kind to us. But fame in Hollywood? That’s too much. As much as I say I would choose fortune over fame, I wouldn’t choose to marry for riches. Maybe I’ll choose fame then — being in this industry, you do want to get recognition. This is too tough. Can I have both? I’m greedy.

Q: Would you rather shave your head or your eyebrows?

A: Oh my god. Ouch! I think I’d rather shave my eyebrows. Some supermodels don’t have eyebrows and still look cool. Maybe I could still look cool. Hair is like a woman’s crowning glory. And I don’t think I have a very nice head shape.

Q: Would you rather have Shane Pow or Bobby Tonelli?

A: I would choose Bobby. Maybe because Shane is a bit young. (He’s 24, by the way.) Guys mature later than girls. Bobby is friendly and took the initiative to speak to me. I think Shane is a little shy — maybe because of the particular scene that we had to do, he was very shy around me and was more of an introvert. If people don’t open up to me first, I find it very hard to open up to them, so it can be quite hard to connect.

Ms J Contemplates Her Choice is in cinemas now.
