SINGAPORE — A cappella group MICappella, from Singapore, has been voted the Favorite Asian A Cappella Group at the recent 2013 A Cappella Community Awards (ACAs), defeating tough competition from the likes of Taiwan Golden Melody Award winners O-Kai Singers and Voco Noco.
The ACAs are the People’s Choice Awards of the a cappella world, and is organised by the Contemporary A Cappella Society (CASA), a non-profit organisation based in the United States.
The six-member collective — Juni Goh, Lee Ein Ein, Calin Wong, Eugene Yip, Peter Huang and YK Teng — were understandably ecstatic by the win.
“To be recognised internationally by a cappella aficionados is yet another testament that we are heading in the right direction,” said Huang. “We are really looking forward to meeting all the amazing people who have worked with us on the album and voted for us to win the Favourite Asian A Cappella Group in the A Cappella Community Awards this year.”
It has been a great year for MICappella. They released their debut album, Here We Go; they represented Singapore in various music festivals, such as the Hong Kong Asia-Pop Music Festival, the Borneo Cultural Festival in Sibu and the recent AMC Live ROCK ON! Music Festival in Chengdu.
They also became the first a cappella group to be nominated at the coming Singapore Hit Awards 2013, with nods for Best Newcomer Award, Best Group, Most Popular Group and Regional Outstanding Artiste (Singapore).
MICappella will also be heading to Raleigh, North Carolina, next month, where they are headlining SoJam 2013, an annual all-weekend vocal music festival, alongside the Grammy-winning Swingle Singers and Eh440 from Canada.
