Love On The Equator (The Ukulele Girls) | 3/5

SINGAPORE - The duo called The Ukulele Girls have finally released their debut album, which for fans, has been a long time coming. What’s interesting is that the songs on the album really seems to be a musical descriptor of the two ladies, Kaylin Toh and Daphne Tian. No, the songs aren’t quite like the wear-your-heart-on-your-sleeve type testimonies a la Taylor Swift or Rachael Yamagata; rather, they sonically represent who the girls are and what they are like. The tunes are light without being lightweight, and percolate with a vivaciousness that doesn’t come across as too flip or frothy. Sure, songs such as The French Song (A Song In French), Dear Santa or In A Fat Situation may be a little too cute for words and a majority of the songs utilise the almost-swing shuffle that many ukulele players favour, which tends to dilute the individual songs’ identities. But tracks such as Sit And Wait, Drawing Circles, When I Sneeze and I’ve Lost My Mind show the Girls stretching their musical muscles, and you can’t ignore the so happy vibes emanating from them as they sing about life, love and all the little things.
