One Direction beats Justin Bieber in MTV Stars of 2013 voting campaign
NEW YORK/LONDON — The popular boy-band One Direction has been named MTV’s Stars of 2013, after attaining 40.8 million votes in the #MTVstars social media campaign.
One Direction overtook Justin Bieber in the online voting competition, who had 40.5 million votes in the end. The competition was tight throughout the month-long campaign, which saw 117 million votes coming in internationally via Twitter.
“We’ve just found out that you voted us top of the list for the MTV’s Stars of 2013 — thank you so, so much! We heard we racked up over 40 million votes. We can’t believe the hard work — it must have taken you absolutely ages. Thank you so, so much!” said One Direction’s Liam Payne in a video message on the group’s YouTube page.
Ke$ha, 30 Seconds to Mars, The Wanted, Nicki Minaj, Beyonce, Chris Brown, Rihanna and Little Mix were in the top 10 of MTV’s Stars of 2013.
One Direction recently topped the UK and US charts with their latest album Midnight Memories.
