Shigga Shay tops iTunes Singapore charts

SINGAPORE – Young Singaporean rapper Pek Jin Shen, who goes by the moniker, Shigga Shay, has become the latest Singaporean musician to top the iTunes Singapore charts with his new song, LimPeh. The song, released yesterday, shot to the top of the charts within 24 hours and is currently steadily climbing up the iTunes Malaysia charts too.

Written and produced by Shigga Shay and mixed by well-known producer Don Richmond, the song began as a dare to write a Hokkien rap song. While the finished product also features English and Mandarin lyrics, the rapper roped in Ah Boys To Men stars Tosh Zhang (aka Tosh Rock, who is also in the rap collective Grizzle Grind Crew) and Wang Wei Liang to help with the Hokkien lines. Tosh is featured in the second verse (wherein he raps about what it means to be Singaporean and what the country has achieved), while Wei Liang appears during the humourous bridge as he tries to explain what “lim peh” means.

For the record, “lim peh” is Hokkien vernacular for “your father”, and refers to the speaker. It is usually used to exert authority, and in certain situations, seniority, over another person.

Shigga Shay released his album, They Call Me Shigga last year, and was the first Singaporean to be featured on the popular hip-hop site, WorldStarHipHop.com in 2011. He is also the youngest hip-hop artiste to appear on the Singapore radio charts. Other local musicians to top the iTunes Singapore charts include singer Derrick Hoh and rock band, The Great Spy Experiment.
