SINGAPORE — Six years after they released their last album, We Satellites, in 2008, the Singaporean rock trio look ready to unleash new music in a big way.
Electrico — Dave Tan (guitar, vocals), Desmond Goh (bass) and William Lim Jr (drums) — is set to appear at the Good Vibes Festival (GVF), which will be held at the Sepang Go-Kart Circuit in Malaysia this weekend. The band said the set will include not only their usual hits, but new music that they’ve written.
Last week, the band also posted a 35-second video of themselves rehearsing some tracks in the studio on their Facebook page. Earlier this year, Electrico uploaded several new songs on Soundcloud, which the band labelled as demo recordings. The songs include Eyes Wide Open, a downtempo shuffle ballad; the dreamy almost-New Wave sonic exploration, Wayside; a throbbing bass-led number called Fire In The Sky; an uptempo rocker, Livin’ The Night; and the punchy pop offering, Easy Go.
All the tracks feature a more electro vibe, making them sound more like a New Wave oufit — but with guitars — compared to the indie rock image they’d made for themselves with previous releases. It’s also the first new music from the band since last year’s No!, a pulsating riff-driven number that was used for Asia Pacific Breweries’ responsible drinking campaign called Have A Good Night Out.
That song was one of the very first tracks they started working on after they decided to start jamming again after a hiatus of about two years.
However, apart from playing sets at Music Matters Live and Baybeats early last year, Electrico have been fairly silent on the performance front.
“It feels great to go out and play again, especially in a music festival such as GVF,” bassist Goh told TODAY. “We have locked ourselves up in the studio (and have been) honing our chops and refining the new songs, which will be showcased (at the festival). We’re looking forward to a great party up north!”
The Good Vibes Festival will be the first major festival the band are playing this year; and all the new songs on SoundCloud — despite them being demos — are about as catchy as anything else they’ve done.
Do all the new songs mean that a new album in the works?
Yes, although how soon that will happen remains to be seen.
“As much as our time off made us realise how much we miss performing, it has also reminded us how important it is to gig, get back on stage and road test new materials before we go back into the recording studio,” said Tan. “That’s what we’re starting to do again, at our own pace. We’ve gotten some great feedback from great producers, and we’re looking forward to releasing new materials soon.”
