SINGAPORE – The 40 nominees for this year’s Star Awards Top 10 Most Popular Male and Female Artistes were unveiled yesterday (March 9) at a stage event held at VivoCity.

Besides the usual suspects (Rui En, Joanne Peh anyone?), it also includes people who have been missing from the list for the past few years, such as Felicia Chin, Shaun Chen and Marcus Chin, who are back in the game. Four popular celebs have also made it to the nomination list for the first time: Shane Pow, Jayley Woo, Carrie Wong and You Yi. Interestingly, of MediaCorp’s 8 Dukes, four others besides Pow made the list: Desmond Tan, Romeo Tan, Ian Fang and Xu Bin.

Pow said he celebrated the news of his nomination by fist-bumping himself. “Is that weird?” he laughed. Well, yes.

“I went to the gym after that, because I want to look good if I get the award,” the 24-year-old said. “It’s very heart-warming to know that people actually know who I am after my hard work. (In) the first two years (of my career) I didn’t get in, and then the third year, people started noticing me… I think it’s a bit of a pat on my back. I’m getting somewhere.”

His fellow first-time nominee, 20-year-old Carrie Wong, whose career is only a year old, couldn’t quite believe that she now had a third nomination.  She is also nominated this year for Best Supporting Actress (The Journey: Tumultuous Times) and Best Newcomer.

“When I first heard the news from my manager, I asked her, ‘Did they get it wrong?’ And when I told my mum, she had the same reaction. Because everything happened so fast: It’s my first year and I have three nominations at this year’s Star Awards,” she said. “It’s unbelievable for me. I don’t know how to react. I’m very, very lucky and very, very blessed.”

And for 23-year-old Jayley Woo, who is making her first appearance on this Most Popular list, popularity is going to take some getting used to.

“In secondary school, I was bullied a lot. I was class chairman so I had to report absentees or whoever skipped classes. That gave me a reason to not be related to the word ‘popular’. So, I feel like I’m still living a dream, literally,” she said.
