SINGAPORE — Last year’s nursing themed drama, You Can Be An Angel Too, is returning for a second season on Mediacorp TV Channel 8. The cast gathered today for a ceremony marking the start of filming for You Can Be An Angel 2, which will debut on Nov 1.

The new season sees the return of main cast members Zoe Tay, Xiang Yun, Bryan Wong, Rebecca Lim, Zheng Geping, Aloysius Pang and Xu Bin, and the addition of Thomas Ong and Carrie Wong.

Elvin Ng and Sheila Sim, who starred in the first season, will return only to make cameo appearances in the first episode — their characters have gone on to bigger and better things abroad.

The series is produced with the support of Care To Go Beyond, a national campaign for Nursing and Allied Health Professions, and hopes to raise the profile of nursing as a profession.

At the ceremony, Tan Soh Chin, Ministry of Health’s Chief Nursing Officer, thanked the cast for having “portrayed nursing so well” in the first season.

“It is true that the intake of nurses at the diploma and even at the degree level has gone up last year and this year,” said Tan.

Season One, which aired in Jan 2015 “had a very good outcome and high viewership, and also very positive responses and encouraging feedback”, said Tan, who added: “The main objective of this drama is to profile nursing so the public will understand the kind of work that nurses are doing, and also to give accurate information about nurses at work.

“At the same time, (to show that) the work itself is satisfying and rewarding, and that there is a career path for them to progress (along).”

This season, the story delves deeper into character development. “Last season we focused on medical cases; this season, we focus on the nurses’ personal lives and the challenges they face,” Zoe Tay said, revealing that her character will battle a serious illness. “You will see that in addition to being angels, nurses are people, too.”

Her character will also be torn between two lovers — Zheng Geping, whose character is recovering from a stroke, and Thomas Ong, who said his character shows up to complicate matters.

“This is the first time I’m playing a third party in a relationship,” he quipped.

Another love triangle will play out among Aloysius Pang, Xu Bin and Carrie Wong, who joins the cast as a student nurse.

“Carrie Wong can never be a nurse in real life because she’s too reckless, she loses things and she gets into accidents very frequently. She can’t take care of herself, so there’s no way she can take care of patients,” Wong quipped.

“Since I can’t be a nurse in real life, it feels really good to try something new in a drama.”

As for Rebecca Lim and Bryan Wong, whose characters married and had a child at the end of last season, they have anything but a happily-ever-after.

“In the first season, we were quite comedic; we argued a lot. In Season Two, our relationship is put to the test,” Lim said. “Our personal lives take a hit.”

Dark plotline aside, both Lim and Wong are glad that the show is getting a second season.

“I had a lot of fun in Season One,” said Lim. “Not every drama has such good chemistry among the cast.”

Echoing her sentiments, Wong said: “I had such a fantastic time when we were filming Season One, alongside this fabulous cast.” And “it’s good to play somebody who has got weird habits and a different take on life.” Catch You Can Be An Angel 2 starting Nov 1, weekdays at 9pm on Mediacorp TV Channel 8.
