SINGAPORE — A 62-year-old male riding a power assisted bicycle, also known as e-bike, was killed in an accident with a lorry on Cecil Street on Friday (Nov 18) morning.
The police said it was alerted to an accident at 10.29am involving a tipper truck and an e-bike along Ceil Street, in the direction of Collyer Quay.
Paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene.
The police has arrested the 54-year-old male tipper truck driver for causing death by a negligent act. Investigations are ongoing.
This is the third e-bike death in less than a month. On Oct 27, two youths riding their e-bikes were killed in a deadly accident involving a trailer on West Coast Highway. A third youth was injured.
The latest death also comes barely a week after the Active Mobility Bill was introduced in Parliament on Nov 9. This new law, if passed, sets out the types of behaviour that could be punishable by law, definitions of pedestrian and personal mobility devices, and provides for powers to enforce the laws, among other things.
Clarification: In an earlier version of the story, we wrote that the male tipper truck driver arrested is 62 years old. The police has clarified that he is 54 years old.
