SINGAPORE — The case of a car that appeared to have travelled against the flow of traffic from the Central Expressway (CTE) to Ayer Rajah Expressway (AYE) yesterday (Sept 21) morning, eventually causing an accident that involved eight other vehicles, is being investigated.
The car — allegedly a red Honda Airwave — was captured by in-vehicle cameras in other cars travelling through the CTE tunnel and on the AYE, and the footage circulating online has prompted much speculation among netizens as to how the driver managed to do so in the first place.
The 63-year-old Singaporean driver of the car has been arrested. The police said investigations are still in progress. The accident involved a motorcycle, a lorry, two cars and four taxis near the South Buona Vista exit towards Changi Road.
Three people were taken, in a conscious condition, to National University Hospital — the driver who was arrested, a 54-year-old taxi driver and a 36-year-old taxi passenger. The accident had also caused a traffic jam along the AYE that stretched for kilometres, said netizens. Photographs of what was said to be the badly-damaged red Honda, with the licence plate visible, were posted on social media.
On the Beh Chia Lor Facebook page, which is dedicated to instances of reckless driving, videos were posted of the car travelling against the traffic.
One video was of the car travelling on the shoulder in the CTE tunnel. The other was of a driver changing lanes on the AYE to avoid the red Honda coming at him. The accident is the third that has occurred on the AYE in the last seven days. A cement truck toppled on the expressway after Corporation Road towards Changi Road yesterday morning, while last Thursday traffic came to a stand-still on part of the expressway for some three hours after a nine-vehicle pile-up.
