SINGAPORE — Electrolux was asked to recall four models of its glass gas cooker hobs on Friday (Jan 6), following a safety warning by the authorities that these appliances could
explode.

The four model numbers are EGT9637CKP, EGT7637EGP, EGT7637CKP and EGT7627CKP.

“Consumers should stop using these four models of the glass gas cooker hobs immediately. Those who own these models can approach Electrolux on redress options,” said Spring

Singapore, the national standards and accreditation body, which issued the product recall.

The affected appliances, which run on town gas, were sold between 2014 and 2016.

Spring said it had received reports of glass shattering and small explosions when the affected glass gas cooker hobs were in use.

In April 2016, it was alerted to a case where an Electrolux glass gas cooker hob shattered and it issued a letter of suspension to the company to stop the sale of affected models. “No further reports were received until Jan 4, 2017, when Spring received a report from a condominium developer of many similar cases, including one which resulted in minor scalding,” it added.

In a separate statement, Electrolux said it had been working closely with Spring Singapore on the matter since April last year, and that each of the product models had been registered and approved in accordance with local laws and regulations, prior to being sold in Singapore.

Electrolux stressed that “this is not a case of a product defect as the product models are certified and compliant”. It added that no other models were affected.

Affected consumers can email the company at customer-care.sin [at] electrolux.com, or call 6727 3613 or 6727 3699, the company said. More information on the refund process will be available shortly through the company’s website and social channels, it added.

“We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause,” Electrolux said.

Mr Lim Biow Chuan, president of the Consumers Association of Singapore (Case), said: “In view of the recall, we also call upon Electrolux to work with its retailers and distributors immediately to provide a refund for the defective glass gas cooker hob, or a replacement of a different model at an equivalent value, including installation.”
