SINGAPORE — A branch of the Gelare cafe at Causeway Point has been ordered to close for two weeks starting on Tuesday (July 25) for failing to keep its premises free from cockroach infestation.
According to a suspension notice on the National Environment Agency (NEA) website, the cafe twice violated the same offence (of failing to keep its premises free from cockroach infestation) over the past 12 months, accumulating 12 demerit points in the process.
Any food outlet that accumulates 12 or more demerit points during a 12-month period may have his licence suspended for a period of either two or four weeks, or cancelled.
Gelare’s suspension period is till Aug 7. The cafe owners have also been fined S$800.
In a Facebook post on Monday, Gelare said that its Causeway Point was closed for an “upgrade”. The post was deleted on Tuesday afternoon and replaced with a new one in the evening.
According to the NEA’s website, all food handlers working at the suspended premises must attend and pass the Basic Food Hygiene Course again, before they can resume work.
