SINGAPORE — Fire was seen coming out of a manhole at the junction of Hill Street and High Street this morning (April 2).

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) was alerted to the incident at around 7.30am this morning (April 2) and the fire was extinguished using a foam jet.

There were no casualties or injuries.

An emergency response team from SP PowerGrid (SPPG) was also deployed to the scene.

A SPPG spokesperson said in a statement: “The team detected a gas leak coming from the joint of a low-pressure pipe underground. The pipe is suspected to have been damaged.

“Our priority was to ensure the safety of everyone in the vicinity, and our officers cordoned off the area. We also immediately deployed additional crew to check on the other pipes in the area. Our officers completed repairs on the affected gas pipe at around 4:45pm,” the spokesperson said, adding that a leak survey team is continuing to monitor the situation and that investigations are still ongoing.
