SINGAPORE — This year’s National Day Parade (NDP) lasted more than three hours, with over 6,000 participants putting up a variety of performances. For some, it was a memorable experience.

Some participants celebrated the second day of Hari Raya in a unique way, as they prepared to put up a Dikir Barat performance at the nation’s birthday bash.

The double celebration made today (Aug 9) all the more memorable.

Muhammad Abdul Hamid, a participant at NDP 2013, said: “Celebrating Hari Raya and National Day, it’s like the first time this year. So it’s something very special. Not only to us Muslims, also to every Singaporean in Singapore.”

Muhammad Alif Djohan, also a participant, said: “With my father by my side, and my friends by my other side, I think in a way this is in a way celebrating Hari Raya with my friends and family.”

Creating more memories of National Day is something that has become second nature to Ng Hee Seng.

The 58-year-old has taken part in the National Day Parade for over 30 years.

Mr Ng said: “From the time I started, all my hair and my beard were black, now it’s getting whiter. The spirit is still the same, we will feel the rush when we march and the people are at the side of the road - that is definitely the high point of the parade. And finally, when we all stand together for the (national anthem) at the end of the show, that’s where I think some of us will feel the goose bumps, you can only be there to experience it.”

Performing daring stunts in front of the crowd was also a moment to remember for the extreme sportsmen who participated in the parade.

Participant Tommy Joel Francis said: “We will be riding around on stage with lights, doing our tricks, we have to keep a safe distance with each other if not we’ll crash. We’ll be synchronising with the music.” CHANNEL NEWSASIA
