SINGAPORE — Mr Murali Pillai of the People’s Action Party’s is in the lead for the Bukit Batok by-election, according to a sample count by the Elections Department.

He won 61 per cent of the votes in the sample count, compared to 39 per cent garnered by his Singapore Democratic Party opponent, Dr Chee Soon Juan.

The sample count is derived from counting 100 random ballot papers from each of the nine polling stations in Bukit Batok.

The ELD first made results of the sample count available to the public at the last General Elections in 2015, in a bid to discourage speculation about the results. Almost all the sample count results in the last election were accurate within 2 percentage points.

The confirmed results for the Bukit Batok by-election are expected in a few hours.
