SINGAPORE — A new SkillsFuture Council to help Singaporeans advance in their careers and be recognised on the basis of their skills will soon be launched, said Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam today (Sept 17).

Mr Tharman, who is chairing the tripartite committee, said: “We want to help everyone develop the skills relevant to the future, and we must build a future based on mastery of skills in every job.”

He noted that besides strengthening polytechnics and ITE pathways, the Applied Study in Polytechnics and ITE Review (ASPIRE) brought forward a broader issue. Singapore needs to go beyond paper qualifications and move towards, for instance, recognising that a whole set of skills matter in how well we perform, said Mr Tharman.

Taking the work of ASPIRE and the new CET masterplan forward, the tripartite council can ensure that every Singaporean can advance in their careers and be recognised on the basis of their skills. It will drive this process, said Mr Tharman, speaking at the official opening of the Lifelong Learning Institute.
