About 180 Home Team officers who were involved in the operations to quell the Little India riot last December will be the first to receive a new award launched by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) yesterday.

Speaking at the Home Team National Day Observance Ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister and Home Affairs Minister Teo Chee Hean said the Home Team Operational Service Medal recognises officers who have “responded to deal with major incidents”.

The MHA added that the medal is for those who “participated at the frontline of significant local operations”.

The first recipients of the award include regular officers, full-time National Servicemen, auxiliary police officers, and crew members of outsourced emergency ambulances involved in the operations that day. Mr Teo will give these out at a ceremony to be held next month.

Separately, DPM Teo also gave out the Minister for Home Affairs National Day Awards to 73 members of the public, 105 Home Team Officers and 10 Home Team Volunteers at the ceremony yesterday. ALFRED CHUA
