‘Pioneer generation’ to get help with insurance premiums: PM Lee

SINGAPORE — The Government will help older Singaporeans pay for their premiums under the revamped national insurance scheme, Medishield Life, through a new Pioneer Generation Package.

SINGAPORE — The Government will help older Singaporeans pay for their premiums under the revamped national insurance scheme, Medishield Life, through a new Pioneer Generation Package.

At the National Day Rally speech this evening (Aug 18), Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said that this group of Singaporeans who are mostly retired, and in their late 60s at least, have worked hard to build today’s Singapore and paved the way for the present generation to live better lives than themselves.

They have earned less and lived with fewer safety nets, he said. “We must take special care of this pioneer generation in their golden years,” said Mr Lee. “I think we owe it to them.”

Mdm Roilah Baba, who is retired and is not covered under MediShield is “very happy” to hear that more help will be extended to older Singaporeans.

Although the 68-year-old does not suffer from any medical conditions, she is unable to work because of weak knees and worries that a major and sudden illness would wipe out the S$5,000 left in her Medisave.

The monthly Central Provident Fund (CPF) Minimum Sum Scheme payouts which she relies on to take care of herself and two teenage grandsons, after her son passed away, will also end in about two years.

“I try my best to take good care of my health. But with the extra help, I have a better peace of mind and I don’t have to burden my grandson,” Mdm Roilah said.
