SINGAPORE — A popular pork rib soup restaurant at 365 Balestier Road was damaged in the early hours of Saturday (Aug 19) by a customer seen on camera toppling a steamer and hurling utensils and a chair.

The police said they are investigating the rash act, which took place at the Balestier Bak Kut Teh (Kian Lian) restaurant.

A video of the incident posted on The restaurant’s Facebook page showed a man in a black shirt hurling utensils and a chair at the counter.

He later walked to a steamer and pushed it over, causing the appliance — commonly used to keep dim sum warm — to topple over.

Glass shards from the steamer were seen scattered on the floor.

The man, who was seen gesticulating angrily, later left the restaurant with three other men, who were seated with him earlier.

According to the post on Balestier Bak Kut Teh (Kian Lian)’s Facebook page, the four men appeared drunk and were immediately attended to by one of its staff.

After the menu and utensils were laid on the table, the men allegedly became impatient and started a commotion.

Balestier Bak Kut Teh (Kian Lian) said that while the damage to its restaurant — which amounted to at least $5,000 — can be fixed and replaced, its staff were “frightened and shaken to be terrorised in this manner”.

The timestamp on the video showed that the incident happened at 2.38am. The police confirmed that a report was lodged at 2.40am.

Police investigations are ongoing.
