SINGAPORE — The police confirmed that officers were at the premises of a mobile phone retailer at Sim Lim Square on Sunday, after reports were made against the outlet.
It is understood that the shop in question was the former Mobile Air — which had recently reopened with a new name, HJ Mobile. Chinese evening daily Lianhe Wanbao reported yesterday that men in plainclothes were seen at the store on Sunday afternoon, hauling away receipts, some mobile phones and computers.
Mobile Air had made headlines in recent weeks after it emerged that it had tried to issue a refund ordered by the Small Claims Tribunal with S$1,010 in coins. A Vietnamese tourist had also gone down on his knees to tearfully beg for a refund.
The store was closed for several days, but reopened last week under new owner Ricky Lee, a former employee of Mobile Air owner Jover Chew.
The police did not elaborate on their investigations, saying it was inappropriate to comment further.
Meanwhile, Minister of State (Trade and Industry) Teo Ser Luck met 10 members from the Sim Lim Square management council yesterday, following its letter to the ministry expressing concern about errant retailers in the shopping mall.
Mr Teo said both sides had agreed that more effective measures were needed. “The management council could implement some preventive measures in the interim,” he said, adding the mall was looking into how to raise consumer awareness and notify consumers of errant shops.
“While the police are investigating the case, we are also looking at enhancing our laws, strengthening the enforcement process and continuing with our engagement efforts,” Mr Teo said.
