SINGAPORE — Eight radicalised Bangladeshi nationals were detained in Singapore under the Internal Security Act last month for alleged terror related activities, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said on Tuesday (May 3).
This is the third major terror-related case in Singapore reported this year. Here's a quick recap of the two other sets of arrests announced by the MHA in January and March.
JAN 20: 27 BANGLADESHI WORKERS ARRESTED FOR TERROR PLOTS
In January, the MHA revealed that 27 Bangladeshi workers here had been arrested after they were found to be contemplating armed jihad overseas as well as in their homeland.
- The arrests marked the first time Singapore has uncovered a jihadist terror cell comprising foreigners.
- Investigations showed that the Bangladeshis arrested were not planning any attacks in Singapore.
- Some of those arrested had encouraged members of their religious study group to return to Bangladesh and wage armed jihad against the Bangladeshi government.
- The MHA said the group had been meeting since 2013, holding weekly gatherings at a few local mosques near their places of lodging to discuss armed jihad and conflicts that involved Muslims.
- All but one of them were repatriated in December 2015.
- The remaining man was serving a 12-week jail term for attempting to leave Singapore illegally after learning about the arrests of his fellow group members. It was reported then that he would be repatriated once he completes his sentence.
MARCH 16: 3 SINGAPOREANS ARRESTED FOR TAKING PART IN ARMED VIOLENCE IN YEMEN
Three Singaporeans were arrested under the Internal Security Act (ISA) for taking part in the sectarian conflict in Yemen, while another citizen was also detained for intending to join a Kurdish militia group in Syria to fight against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS).
- The three Singaporeans arrested was the first instance made public of Singaporeans participating in strife abroad, instead of merely having the intent to do so.
- All three had performed armed sentry duties at a religious institution in Yemen they had attended.
- Two of the men had used firearms in fighting off Houthis — a Shia group — and were “prepared to kill and be killed as ‘martyrs’”. The third man was armed “with the aim to kill” although he did not encounter any situation requiring him to open fire.
- The 4th man arrested is the first known case of a Singaporean seeking to take up arms overseas against ISIS
