SINGAPORE — With the latest order of 665 buses with wheelchair-friendly features, almost the entire fleet of SBS Transit buses will be wheelchair accessible by 2017, said the transport operator today (July 1).

SBS Transit has placed orders worth S$311 million for the Euro V buses, of which 250 are single deck Mercedes Citaro buses and 415 are double deck Volvo B9TL Wright buses. Of the new buses, 296 will be funded by the Government under the Bus Service Enhancement Programme (BSEP).

Delivery of the buses will begin in the middle of next year and be completed by 2017. By then, more than 90 per cent of about 3,800 buses belonging to SBS Transit will be Euro IV-compliant and above.

Said SBS Transit Chief Executive Gan Juay Kiat: “We have committed around S$1.3 billion to purchase more than 3,000 buses since our fleet renewal programme began in 2006. By 2017, we would have replaced almost the entire fleet, and expanded the fleet by

more than 36 per cent.”
