‘Simplify housing schemes’ to help elderly

SINGAPORE — Experts have called for a simplification of housing schemes targeting the elderly and for the authorities to take a more active role in “right-sizing” seniors, which they say would take away the fear and uncertainty the elderly face when making decisions on their housing needs.

SINGAPORE — Experts have called for a simplification of housing schemes targeting the elderly and for the authorities to take a more active role in “right-sizing” seniors, which they say would take away the fear and uncertainty the elderly face when making decisions on their housing needs. The 11 industry experts discussed the topic of monetisation options for the elderly in a Our Singapore Conversation dialogue held at the National library yesterday (June 5). Another session on this topic will be held next Wednesday. The participants were asked to discuss enhancements to present schemes such as the Silver Housing Bonus and Lease Buyback Scheme, options from overseas or the private market that could be adopted in Singapore and how to enhance the current awareness and understanding of the monetisation schemes for the elderly. Suggestions included setting a minimum age for the subletting of units, better design for Studio Apartments, which some participants found sorely missing, and HDB taking a greater role in the matching of tenants to units or rooms put up for rent by the elderly.
