SINGAPORE — The Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) has unveiled its newest ship, Littoral Mission Vessel (LMV) Independence.

Wife of Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen, Mrs Ivy Ng, today (July 3) launched the vessel in a ceremony held at Benoi Shipyard.

The locally-built LMV will replace the ageing Fearless-class patrol vessel (PV) in maritime security operations.

The new vessel is more than twice as large as its predecessor, enabling it to hold more fuel and supplies. This allows the LMV to stay out at sea longer.

Despite its greater size, the LMV is manned by 23 crew members, as compared to the PV’s 30-person crew. The LMV can also move 35 per cent faster.

In terms of firepower, the LMV is also the RSN’s most-equipped vessel. Its arsenal of both non-lethal and lethal weapons ranges from a water cannon system to an OTO Melara 76mm gun.

Speaking at the launch, Dr Ng said: “The LMV is not just another new ship, but instead will lead the way in how we use technology to overcome operational demands.”

A total of eight LMVs are expected to be operational within the next five years.
