S’pore’s first woman judge retires

The Republic’s first woman judge, Justice Lai Siu Chiu, will retire today.

The Republic’s first woman judge, Justice Lai Siu Chiu, will retire today.

The 65-year-old has been a member of the Supreme Court Bench for more than 22 years.

Justice Lai was the first woman to be appointed as Judicial Commissioner in 1991 and became Singapore’s first female judge three years later.

In a statement from the Supreme Court, Justice Lai said her two decades on the Bench has been “an enjoyable, enriching and immensely satisfying experience”.

She added that she hopes to continue to be involved in the law in some way after her retirement.

Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon also noted Justice Lai’s “illustrious” 40-year career in the legal profession. She was admitted to the Bar in 1973 and was with Allen & Gledhill until her appointment to the Supreme Court. He added: “I thank her for her sterling contribution to the Supreme Court, the Legal Service and the legal profession and wish her a fulfilling and happy retirement.”
