Prime Minister’s Office, Istana websites hacked

SINGAPORE — Subpages on the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) and Istana websites were hacked into late last night (Nov 7).

SINGAPORE — Subpages on the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) and Istana websites were hacked into late last night (Nov 7). The IDA said the PMO subpage was compromised at 11.17pm last night, and that the Istana website was hacked into at around 12.20am this morning (Nov 8). Both the two main websites are still working, and the IDA said they will restore the compromised pages as soon as possible. The matter is under investigation. A vulnerability known as cross-site scripting in those subpages were exploited to display pages from other sources, the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) said in a statement. Cross-site scripting, one of the more common hacking techniques, exploits vulnerabilities in web-based applications, their servers or plug-in systems to fold malicious content into the content being delivered from the compromised site. “We will continue to strengthen all Government websites,” the IDA said. “This includes the checking and fixing of vulnerabilities and software patching. While this is in progress, visitors to Government websites may experience intermittent problems with access. This will be completed as soon as possible.” The statement did not specify who the hackers were. The latest intrusion comes after hackers threatened to cripple Singapore’s information technology infrastructure last week. On Wednesday, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong issued a warning to those who threaten to launch a cyber-attack on the Government’s IT infrastructure. He had said the authorities would “spare no effort to try and track down” the person or group behind the threats.
