Warm and dry weather in store for rest of July, say forecasters

SINGAPORE — Dry and warm weather is expected for the rest of this month, in contrast to the wet conditions in the first two weeks, the Meteorological Service Singapore said on Monday (July 17).

SINGAPORE — Dry and warm weather is expected for the rest of this month, in contrast to the wet conditions in the first two weeks, the Meteorological Service Singapore said on Monday (July 17).

The daily maximum temperatures are forecast to range between 32°C and 33°C on most days, and could reach a high of around 34°C on a few days.

Residents here can expect one or two days of widespread thundery showers with occasional gusty winds before dawn and into the morning, however.

This is due to the passage of a Sumatra squall, a line of thunderstorms that develops at night over Sumatra or the Malacca Straits.

These usually move east towards Singapore and Peninsular Malaysia early in the morning.

For the rest of the month, there could be short thundery showers on four to six days, mostly in the afternoon.

This is because of strong solar heating of land areas, according to the national weather experts.

Rainfall is expected to be normal for this month, which saw a 30-year average of about 154mm of rain between 1981 and 2010.

In the first half of the month, rainfall was higher than normal over most parts of the island.

Paya Lebar recorded the highest rainfall 168.4 mm — which is nearly double the average — while Changi recorded the lowest of 77.2mm, or 3 per cent below average.

Singapore experienced moderate to heavy thundery showers on most days in the late morning and early afternoon.

The wet weather brought cool night temperatures on several days, with the lowest daily minimum temperature of 22.3°C recorded around Marina South on July 12.
